Staying Safe During Water Removal Work on Wet and Damp Homes in Hartford
The introduction of water into areas that remain dry under normal, non-crisis situations can make these previously safe locations full of hazards. SERVPRO technicians wear personal protective equipment (PPE) during many jobs in the Hartford area. Sometimes, this precaution is not enough. Electrical hazards can bypass the PPE and cause injuries. All of our teams, including our building and reconstruction team, use these safety precautions wherever warranted.
When working on restoring a home in Hartford, especially where water removal is part of the job, we want to make the area as safe as possible. Electricity plays a large part in any mitigation work. We use effective methods to enhance our safety while keeping us efficient and capable of completing the water removal work your home needs.
The National Fire Protection Association 70 210.8 B5 requires the installation of ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) in all locations within six feet of a water source. When a broken water pipe soaks walls, floors, and furniture, the risk of an electrical shock increases. Using portable GFCI outlets helps us manage the risk involved in working near water. These temporary units break the electrical current whenever a grounding fault occurs, protecting people from harmful shocks.
At times, running power to equipment means using long extension cords. When water damage covers the floor, we want to keep these cords elevated, instead of allowing them to lie in wet or damp conditions. We use curved plastic pieces instead of nails to prevent sharp bends in the cord that can lead to weakening over time.
Smaller shocks can happen when temporary contact is made with electricity. This might happen when handling cords or outlet strips with exposed metal components, including wiring. We cover all such places with either a plastic cover or electrical tape. Other kinds of tape can fail to provide enough protection. It only takes one strand of wire to shock someone, so repairing such electrical equipment, whether on extension cords or on equipment, requires we do so under ample lighting.
When handling electrical equipment, we take it one step more by not wearing metal jewelry that can conduct electricity. Loose-fitting non-metal jewelry can also pose safety risks if they get caught in the moving parts of any equipment.
Signs explaining problems with electrical outlets or equipment help to keep us and our customers safe. If you see these, please do not ignore the warnings stated on the tag or sign. Also, please do not remove them. Operating equipment before it has been serviced can cause serious injuries. As soon as servicing finishes, the person repairing these items removes the warning.
